1. Explain the concept of “City as a Computing Platform.”
Professor Yoon deems city as a monumental feature of human civilization. Moreover, he elaborates on the idea that those who live in a city is always surrounded by computer technology. This is where his idea of “City as a computing platform” emerges.
“City as a computing platform” basically means utilizing technologies within cities to make it more generative, participatory and distributive amongst members of cities. Cities are the center of production, finance, transportation, media, consumption and culture. However, contrary to the key features of cities, the problems such as poverty, traffic congestion, population problem, housing issues and educational gap occur. To solve these problems, as cities are already serving as a huge computer system, establishing a city as a platform for all members of the city to participate in digital (or computerized) innovations is the ultimate goal of the idea.
